The key to life...

I read this today and loved it:

"When I was 5 years old, my mom always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down "happy". They told me I didn't understand the assignment and I told them they didn't understand life."

Beth's Blissful Badass Birthday Blog...

Wow, another year just flew by! I love life so much that I hate to see it happen so quickly. But it keeps getting better.

I'd like to thank my mother for turning her vagina into a clown car to give birth to me 27 years ago. And also for calling me every year to sing a special Bday song. :)

We slept in this morning and then had a great lunch with Adrienne, Charlie, and beautiful baby Ava at Blue Dahlia Bistro! We love them!! They are some of the coolest people ever...plus all of Ava's baby gear is stylish in animal print or Tiffany blue. ;)

I decided this afternoon that I wanted to go to tea, so I found this awesome little tea house called The Steeping Room where we met up with my supafly Michelle & Nick! I'm quite sure they'll be engaged very soon. :) Oh romance!!

It took me about 10 minutes to pick a tea because they had about 100 to choose from, but the one we chose was delish! I would definitely go back and try out some other varieties.

I asked everybody to do "pinkies up!":

Thank you, baby, for a marvelous day. :) ....and many more...

Wanderlust...

Carl & I subscribe to "Word of the Day" from Dictionary.com and the words they send to our inbox are typically either something common that we already know or something that we'd probably never use because we'd sound like morons trying to fit it naturally into a conversation.

But today's word was:

wanderlust \WON-der-luhst\, noun:
a strong desire to wander or travel

Oh my friends, Carl & I are filled with wanderlust! The plan right now is to build our business to where we can sell it within 3 years, then move somewhere completely new! There are a few places we'd consider in the USA still (Nashville, NYC, Boston, Denver, Hawaii, San Francisco, etc) and then we fully intend to live in Europe someday. Hopefully France or Italy. And now I'm wanderlusting...

Community...

Everyone should know about this website: www.carecalendar.org

Some beautiful folks we know recently set up a Care Calendar for a lovely woman who is going through chemo. The calendar allow you to go online and see what days she needs meals or help with various tasks. Then you sign up to fill the needs!

I'm sure there have been times when you know someone going through a rough situation and you wonder how you can help. Well, this is a perfect way to rally the troops and help your brothas and sistas!

We signed up to deliver a meal last week and made soup, salads, rolls, and apple slices with a little organic dark chocolate drizzle. Good stuff for the body.

It's only been in recent years that I've realized the importance of building community. I think it's absolutely essential for personal development to have relationships with people that are beyond the superficial. You wanna go...(sing it with me)...where everybody knows your naaame...and they're always glad you caaame...

They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, adults are just older versions of children. You still need that village of people to be there for you in your later years. People that care about you and will help you when you're down. People that will support your ambitions and want to see you succeed.

I'm talking about real connections. Not the kind that happen with going to the club and doing some dry-humping on the dance floor. Community begins when people come together to make sure that every soul is included and accounted for. The strong help the weak. With that being said, to avoid this becoming socialism, each person must be personally responsible for being all they can be. And having a community of people you can look up to can make all the difference in getting up and then staying on your feet. The mark of a truly great man is reflected in his ability to make others feel like they can be great, too.

When building your community of friends, it's important to remember that the personalities you surround yourself with will be hugely influential in your own personal development. So choose wisely! Negativity can bring you down just as happiness and sunshine will brighten your days.

And you can't always just be the child in the village that everyone is tending to...depending on the charity of others to get what you want. You need to be part of the village, a worthwhile member of society. And to be worthy of kindness, you must be willing to give back what you give 10 times over. Earl calls it Karma. Religion threatens with heaven vs. hell. I say just be good for goodness' sake! Spread a little love butter on your toast, then share it. It's good and good for you.

Debbie Downer...

I just read this article about happiness and the importance of building a positive community around you. Don't surround yourself with negativity as it has an adverse affect on your own outlook. I need to expand on this topic when I have time, but please don't be a Debbie Downer:

Christmas is coming...

I just finished writing a Christmas song on Saturday and my sweet honey pie of a husband booked some studio time for me on Wednesday to record it! I'll post it for free download on my Myspace page when it's done. :)

Little Sista...

Carl & I decided to join the Big Brothers Big Sisters program about a month ago. We had to fill out a whole bunch of paperwork, they called all of our references, and then we met face to face with a "match specialist". And we've been waiting for a couple of weeks while they attempted to find the perfect "Little" for each of us.

Well...they called me yesterday to say they found a match for me! I'm so excited! Apparently she's 11 and is really into artistic things like music, painting, etc.

I can't wait to meet her!!!

Three Things...

Some things I'm thankful for today:

1. Whole Foods (they had holiday sampling tonight)
2. My fuzzy blanket on the couch
3. Women with loads of junk in the trunk who insist on tucking their shirt into their pants with elastic waistbands. Thank you for the viewing pleasure.

My Lovely Lady Apples...

OMG, after playing in the cranberry bathtub tonight at the grocery store, I found the cutest thing ever...they're called "Lady Apples"...here is one posing next to a regular apple:

Look! They had mini pears, too!! I might carry them around with me for the next couple weeks, that way I can look at them whenever I need a pick-me-up. :)

Carl made vegan pasta last night! You melt soy cheese and then just add your favorite herbs & spices. He steamed some fresh snap peas with it and served it with wheat toast. I've been on a huge toast kick lately....

Yeah toast!

The Sixers...

Yesterday was our big 6 year Anniversary and we had the loveliest of days...

We slept in, then got up and chilled on the couch for a bit. When I got out of the shower, Carl surprised me with a little living room picnic for us! And he found my favorite Disney movie on DVD, The Little Mermaid. :) Don't hate!!!

After that, we got ready to go hear Matt McCloskey play some music downtown at The Belmont! And then we scurried off to have a tasty dinner at Manuel's. Somehow I ended up looking twice the size of Carl in this pic:

I'm HORRIBLE at keeping surprises from Carl...ok from anyone really...so I ended up spilling the beans early...but for our Anniversary, I got us tickets to the filming of a new Jim Gaffigan Comedy Central special, coming up in December!

I heart you, me loave.

My Brutha...

My brother, Matthew Michael Singer, turned 29 yesterday. Happy Birthday to this guy who turned out opposite to me in most ways. He's 6'3" with blonde hair and green eyes, I'm 5'4" with brown hair and blue eyes. He enjoys hunting and fishing, I'm a vegetarian. He lives in the boondocks, I like the city. I won't even get in to the more controversial topics, because the important thing is that we can still get along despite all of our differences! That's the beauty of how diversity and acceptance go hand in hand.

So here's to the next year of your life, Mr. Mattypants! I hope it's the best one yet. :)

In my heart there rings a melody...

My monkey & I went to see his favorite guitar player, Tommy Emmanuel, at the Texas Union Ballroom on Sunday!

The concert was beautiful and inspiring. Even though I'm not a guitar player, I feel like Tommy & Carl both write "soul melodies". And I'm not talkin' 'bout James Brown! More like this:

The Great Cookie Crusade...

I brought up this Cookie Crusade idea to my Husband, and being my ever-supportive partner in crime, he went along with yet another "crazy concept by Beth"...

We picked out 5 people that helped with the CD Release Party and baked cookies for them, then showed up at their houses unannounced and snapped a photo with them when they opened the door. I yelled "you've been cookied!!!" and then handed them the sign to hold.

Becky Perez was in charge of refreshments at the party:

John Church was one of your greeters:

Michelle poured the Jesus Juice, seen here with my boyfriend Nicolas:

Michael videotaped and took some pics:

And Ben was another greeter. He wasn't home today when we dropped by, so I'm just really really glad that his car alarm wasn't set, because I left the cookies on his seat. This might've been hard to explain to the cops:

There are many other people to thank and no one is safe from a cookie ambush!!!
