Dirty Laundry...

I never really felt like I fit in with my family. When I was little, I remember telling my aunt that I felt more comfortable at her house than I did my own. As soon as I could, I was so ready to move out!

I got a 6 night a week gig when I was 18 that allowed me to save up enough money to buy a vehicle and get my first apartment, because my parents, though able, refused to help me in the slightest financially. My mother would have, but my father was adamant that I do it on my own. He didn't want me to move out because he wanted me to live at home forever, so he made it as hard on me as possible. It's a very strange fantasy that he had. My brother, Matt, who is turning 30 this year, still lives at home and has never had a real job. You can imagine how that's worked out for him.

My dad & I argued all the time before I left, resulting in him angrily slapping me across the face at one point. I talked to a counselor and shared what my home life was like and she urged me to leave as soon as I possibly could. That's all I needed to hear! I haven't been "home" since.

After I left, my dad directed his anger towards Carl for "taking me away", even threatening to kill him if he ever stepped foot on his property. Carl's never been anything but wonderful to me, he's everything a father-in-law should be proud of!

I haven't been able to have a relationship with my dad for about 8 years now due to him sending me mile-long hateful emails telling me what a horrible person I am, calling me things like "shameful & pathetic" and "an ungrateful brat, at best", so I finally had to break off all contact. For my own sanity.

Even after being chided by him for so many years, I know the things he said aren't true. IMHO, most parents would be glad to have me as their daughter.

His last series of insane emails contained dozens of photos of young girls he's "dating". All of them appeared to be around my age or younger (he's 66) and to this he said, "My thinking is this. Matt gives me everything I need or want, except for sex. So I won't marry unless she thrills me every time I look at her."

ewwwwww!!!

I am incredibly lucky to have a husband that loves me unconditionally. Who supports me and believes in me. I always wanted that from my family and still do, but have accepted that it won't happen.

So I've learned to fully appreciate friends who accept me as I am and live my life with a full heart and an open mind.

Go This Alone...

I wrote this chorus back in December after visiting my Mom & Step-Dad, Rick, in Missouri. Rick has some health problems and was laying in bed feeling really ill. I looked in at one point and my Mom was spooning him and telling him everything was going to be ok. It was one of those moments where you don't know if you should feel happy or sad. Maybe just thankful for unconditional love.

After I wrote the chorus, I started in on the verses after reading journal updates for Ty Dahlstrom. Ty is amazing. His family is amazing. What they are going through right now is life-altering, but they stay strong together.

Inspired by two precious boys, Rick Baldwin & Ty Dahlstrom, who are not going this alone.

HOW, HOW CAN I HELP YOU NOW
HOW DO I BREAK YOU
FREE FROM THIS BURDEN
FREE FROM YOUR HURTIN'
I'D DO ANYTHING AND I'M PROMISING

YOU WON'T GO THIS ALONE
NO YOU WON'T BE ON YOUR OWN
I'LL HOLD YOUR WEARY BONES
NO YOU WON'T GO THIS ALONE

SHAME, SHAME ON THIS ARMY OF PAIN
FOR HURTING MY DARLING
WELL NOTHING SHOULD MESS WITH
SOMEONE SO PRECIOUS
IF WE SOLDIER ON WE WILL OVERCOME

THERE WILL BE DAYS WHEN YOU ARE STRONG
BUT EVEN WHEN THE NIGHTS ARE LONG
I'LL BE HERE WITH YOU

Missouri loves company...

I should have warned you earlier...we were on the loose over Christmas. Living among man & beast in the Show Me State. It was our first trip to see my Mama & Step-Dad in Missouri!

When I booked our flight to leave on Christmas Eve, I just crossed my fingers and hoped for the best since I've heard so many horror stories about traveling over the holidays! But it was honestly the lightest day of travel I've ever experienced. The cab driver that picked us up said that the airport was a madhouse on the 23rd, so we lucked out!

On our flight from Austin to Dallas, we were seated in the emergency exit row, so our seats didn't recline at all. Then on our flight from Dallas to Springfield, MO, we were seated in the very last row, so our seats didn't recline! I enjoy themes. And I was pretty excited to see that we were directly across from the toilet:

My Mom (Susan) and Step-Dad (Rick) picked us up at the airport and drove us to Panera for dinner. I met my cutiepie step-sister, Jennifer, for the first time...along with her boyfriend, Robert:

My beautiful Mama in high-school:

I spent a little time with Rick's retired race horse, Bud. My new mane matches his pretty well:

Tractor #1:

Tractor #2:

Rick's 1965 Mustang (covered in kitty prints...more to come on that):

They live right down the street from the old Route 66! We stopped by this awesome old service station:

This truck was inside the old service station garage. The man that owns the place, invited us in and gave us root beer. :) Very sweet and I felt obligated to sip on it, but I haven't had soda in so long that it gave me a bellyache!

My Mother has 10 cats. That's right. TEN. Plus two big mangy mutts and that giant horsey. How many pets do we have? Just one stray kitty that lives outdoors. Imagine my joy when I met their brood! I made a cat collage:

One of my favorite things that happened was waking up the day after Christmas to the TV blaring in the living room...Rick was watching a "Keeping up with the Kardashians" marathon! I also learned that they're fans of one of my favorite shows, The Girls Next Door. :)

On our flight home, this lovely object marked the exits. It was flesh-colored. In that shape. I think the same person designed this that did that famous Little Mermaid cover...

I'm glad we got to see the fam, but we are happy to be back in Austin!!
